ISLAMIC, Umayyad Caliphate. temp. 'Abd al-Malik ibn Marwan, AH 65-86 / AD 685-705. Drachm (Silver, 30 mm, 3.85 g, 9 h), Arab-Sasanian type. Citing governor ʿAbd al-Rahman ibn Muhammad (AH 80-84 / AD 700-703), SK (Sijistan), AH 84 = 703. Draped bust resembling Khosrau II to right, wearing elaborate mural crown; behind head, ‘GDE ʾp̄zwt’ (‘[may his] glory increase’ in Pahlavi); before head, ‘ʾp̄dlmʾn / Y mhmtʾn’ (‘ʿAbd al-Rahman ibn Muhammad’ in Pahlavi); in outer margin, ‘bism Allāh ˗ rabbī’ (‘In the name of Allah, my Lord’ in Arabic). Rev. Fire altar flanked by two attendants; to left, date in Pahlavi; to right, SK (abbreviation for the name of the mint in Pahlavi). Album 38A. Extremely rare. Somewhat rough, otherwise, very fine.
